Only two hours north of Oslo, you can find one of the most popular winter sports destinations in the world; Sjusjøen. The popularity is largely due to its 350 kilometres of regularly groomed cross-country trails. The area also has a alpine skiing centre, and a biathlon Stadion. Sjusjøen is also a fantastic destination for summer tourism, with fun activities for everyone. You can rent a mountain bike, or choose to hike the trails up to the nearby mountains. For less experienced hikers you can walk the trail around Sjusjøen – the lake that gives the area its name, or the smaller Eftastjernet in Natrudstilen. You could also rent a boat, and spend the day fishing and relaxing on the lake. If you wish to see more of the area, you can also do this from horseback. The two local riding centres arrange varying length trips throughout the whole year. During the winter season, horse sledding is also available.
While Sjusjøen is a popular area for professional athletes to train, it is also very beginner friendly. At Sjusjøen Skisenter, you can rent all necessary skiing equipment for cross-country and downhill skiing. They also offer lessons for beginners. During the winter season, you can also experience husky sledding, ice fishing or the popular outdoor play “Birkebeinerspelet”.
Sjusjøen is only 20 minutes from the nearby Olympic town of Lillehammer where you can find several popular attractions, for example Maihaugen; an open-air museum displaying Norwegian tradition and over 200 buildings from different eras. Lillehammer is also home to one of the most popular attractions in Norway, Hunderfossen Family Park. The park has rides and activities based on Norwegian fairy tales. Next door to the family park you can visit Barnas Gård, a farm with over 150 animals who can be pet, cuddled or fed
